The Marriage Bureau for Rich People by Farahad Zama
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
What an enjoyable, fun, different read. I picked this book up on a whim in an airport (the 2010 way: browsed the bookstore for it, then went on my nook, bought and downloaded it). Indian life and culture fascinates me, especially after visiting the country a couple of years ago. This book provided an interesting look into the Indian culture surrounding marriage. I found it particularly interesting, being newly engaged myself. I recommend as a light read for the summer. View all my reviews »
The Happiness Project by Gretchen Rubin
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
I really enjoyed this book. It’s Eat, Pray, Love for the rest of us (the rest of us who can’t afford to take a year off from our lives and travel the world to find ourselves).
Gretchen Rubin goes looking for happiness in her own backyard. She looks for things she can do in her everyday life that will make an impact (however small) in her overall feeling of happiness. A lot of the gripes she had with her perspective resonated with me (an up-tight perfectionist, always pessimistic and sardonic). The changes she made are things we all know we should do, but the structured way she went about implementing them in her life made the project manager in me happy. Plenty of her resolutions would be applicable to everyone.
Her writing style is light and fun.She throws in a lot of interesting/useful stats and quotes (she’s obsessed with Samuel Johnson). She has a really interesting blog (what a great way to keep this book alive even after I’ve finished reading it).
I’ve emailed her to see a copy of her resolution chart. I’ve just completed a marathon, maybe my next goal will be a happiness project!
